Business Owner

Image

After working in the corporate sector for over 20 years, I felt it was the right time, in 2011, to establish my own business to manage a number of projects and activities for our clients.

The business started out as Xera Consulting but, as the business started to build and our point of difference became evident, we changed out name to Untypical Thinking. Many people would have described the business as a small consulting firm but we felt that we different and that the term "consulting" made us sound too much like the thousands of other small consulting businesses.

With the addition of  several other services and a move away from the traditional "consulting" focus, we dropped the "thinking" part from our name and simply became Untypical.

These days, Untypical focuses on bringing change and transformation to business of all shapes and sizes, with a preference to work with organisations that have a presence across regional Australia. Our Untypical Media stream encompasses a number of services that are described in the sections that follow.

Broadcaster

A chance opportunity to co-host a couple of programs on community radio in 2007 has led me to a passion for broadcasting.

In early 2008, I was given the chance to host a monthly music program - Radio Ga Ga - on 94.1FM WBC in suburban Melbourne. After presenting the program for ten years, and having relocated to Geelong, I was able to pick up the same format, change the program name to Turn Up Your Radio and present it on a weekly basis on 94.7 The Pulse, here in my new home town.

In October 2018, I established an online radio station - Turn Back Time Radio (originally broadcasting as goRadio.Live) which is primarily automated, playing the very best music of the past 70 years. During the COVID lockdown period in 2020 and 2021, I was able to further develop my broadcasting skills by hosting over 100 breakfast programs as well as a Friday night music program each week.

In parallel with the music programs, I hosted and/or commentated over 175 VFL / VFLW football matches, firstly on 3WBC and then on the newly established goFooty.Live (broadcasting via goRadio.Live).

In early 2020, with a COVID-induced program reshuffle on The Pulse, I was given the opportunity to co-host a weekly Saturday morning with Rob Cameron - The 2 Blokes Chatting Radio Show. Initially intended to be a be a temporary fill-in show for a "few weeks till we get past COVID", the program has become entrenched in the weekly roster with well over 100 programs presented.

Podversationalist

Image

In 2016, I discovered the world of podcasting. After a few test runs, I found that my niche is the world of conversational podcasting - or as I like to call it, the creation and publishing of podversations.

I have subsequently developed two brands within the Untypical Media stream - Podversations and Regional Podversations.

Through Podversations, we can assist you in the production of your podcast or provide you with a complete end-to-end podversation service, including hosting your conversational podcast.

Regional Podversations focuses specifically on the full production of podversations for regional councils, business groups and other organisations based outside of the metropolitan areas of Australia.

Our current podversation project is The Regional 250 - a series in which I chat to guests across 250 different regional local government areas.

About Me

Image

Having grown up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne (Australia), I started my professional life as a secondary school teacher in regional Victoria. In 1988, I left teaching for "six months" to see what was happening in the outside world and how that could be applied to my teaching.  Here we are, all these years later and the "six months break from teaching" continues.

Since 1989, I have worked in a range of industries including supply chain and logistics, fuels and lubricants, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), higher education, financial services, media and not-for-profit. I have gained experience in a wide variety of local, regional and global roles including education and training, business and technical support, credit management, business process improvement, business analysis, change management and, most recently, transformation leadership. A number of these roles allowed me to work across Australia, creating a passion for regional Australia and the people who live and work there.

A chance opportunity to participate in a few radio broadcasts in 2008 has allowed a hobby to also become a job. While still participating in community radio on a weekly basis, I have also been able to establish an online radio station - Turn Back Time Radio - and, for several years, to present a broadcasting service for state league football (VFL and VFLW). I have also started hosting a number of podcasts for Untypical and for some of our clients through our newly-rebranded service - Podversations.

I have two adult children - Lucy, who is a school teacher in regional Victoria and Sam who works in commercial real estate research. In March 2021, I graduated to the rank of grandfather with the arrival of Maverick. I have been a paid-up member of the Fitzroy and, subsequently, the Brisbane Lions AFL club for over 40 years and more recently, a member of the Geelong West Giants in our local competition.
